The tenere is far heavier than the Africa twin. Offroad id definitely pick the lighter of the two. If you plan on a lot of long journey the yamaha would be less maintenance being shaft drive and more comfortable i think. I like both bikes but I feel they play two different roles. If you plan on a lot of offroad I'd look for something lighter
Okay, so there is a caveat here. The 1991 Africa Twin we have here isn't technically the original Africa Twin; there was an earlier, limited-production version with a 650cc V-twin in 1988 built at HRC to replicate the Honda NXR Dakar Rally bikes. For model code aficionados, that is the RD03, replaced by the bike we have here, the RD04 in 1990.
In the field if this is suspected to happen on a LiFePO4 outfitted Africa Twin, it might be possible to charge recover with the help of another 12V battery (albeit no current limit protection), or a very high end charger that has the "power supply functionality" built in for LiFePO4 batteries. First of all this thread title should be changed to "Reliable or Fast?" But seriously isn't it amazing the Africa Twin is the consideration for "95% commuting in the San Francisco Bay Area?" Clearly Honda is the best and most misguided motorcycle manufacturer in existence.
